Experience Disney with Port Perry’s Marigold Travel

A trip to “Disney” has been the ultimate in family vacations since the original park opened in California in 1955. It is gratifying to know that some things never change or that, if they do … they only get better. Walt Disney, that pioneering leviathan of family entertainment, followed his original coup in 1971 by the bigger, better and still perennial favourite (for those of us east of the Rockies), Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Suffice it to say, it is an absolute must for parents and children to experience at least once. Too expensive you say? Come in and let us prove you wrong. While we always recommend staying on the resort itself which has several price levels of accommodation; there are also very inexpensive off-site options including campsites. In short, it can be managed on the shoe-string-iest of budgets.

One of the many wonderful aspects of staying within the park is that your budget parameters are set. There are no surprises. Transfers and shuttles are at your beckon call so that you may come and go as you please and the Magic Express is complimentary between the airport and your resort. Resort guests even have extra park time included in their packages. The resorts themselves are all of exceptional quality, from the 5* deluxe accommodations, right on down to the budget-minded value resorts. And there is always that wonderful middle ground of the “moderate” resorts in between. The greatest variance between the three is the distance you will need to travel (all shuttled of course) between your room and the park. The amenities are top-notch no matter which level you choose.

I cannot give high enough praise for the dining plans at Disney. Again, it helps you to stay within budget and the accessibility and variety are extraordinary. The Quick Service Dining plan is often the best idea for impatient youngsters who just want to get back to having the time of their lives. It provides two quick service meals, one selected snack and one refillable resort mug per person, per day. In addition, it often goes on special and is provided free as part of your package if you are staying within the park and book during the promotion.

When I make this recommendation, I am not espousing your typical “mystery meat” buffet. I am talking about a global culinary adventure that you could not sample all of, if you ate every meal there for a year. Of course the fast food standards are always an option for the less adventuresome palate but there is also quite literally a “world” of possibilities from Morocco to Greece, Scandinavia to Japan, Cajun to Vegan. Those who are gluten-free needn’t worry either … there’s even gluten-free beer!

For the older kids, or we overgrown ones, the standard dining plan is a perfect combination of “hurry up” and ‘sit-down-and-be-served’. You receive one quick service, one table service, one snack and one refillable mug per person, per day at over 100 different locations. Though it’s extra and has limited availability (book it early), you may even opt for a “Character” breakfast where you are entertained while you eat by a gaggle of Disney favourites up close and personal. The kids will be blown away!

And so with four Theme Parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and the Animal Kingdom), two Water Parks (Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach), over 20 themed resort hotels, two entertainment districts, and the ESPN state-of-the-art sports complex it is a Utopia for adults and children alike where we can all re-live the magic and wonder of a time when life was full of delicious surprises and endless excitement.

Now, last but not least; why not consider a Disney Cruise? The ships are amazing; with programs for kids three and up, teens, tweens, original Broadway style musicals are available on board but the adults have their own pool, fitness centre, nightclubs and special programs of their own. The staterooms are spacious. There is 24 hour room service. First run films are always accessible and they provide Disney slash first class service to young and young-at-heart alike. And if that’s not compelling enough; they are the only ships that put on an amazing fireworks display on most itineraries and weather permitting. It’s a great compromise for adults who really need to feel a little pampering while still providing the max for the kids.
